Curriculum

Language Arts

Teachers across grades K-5 use the Benchmark Readers' and Writers' Workshop curricula.  These state approved programs address state standards and expose students to a variety of genres.

The workshop model, inherent in both programs, also allows for individualized instruction.  The workshop model divides the instructional block into the following three components: the mini lesson, the independent portion of the workshop and the share.  All workshops begin with a short mini lesson that explicitly teaches a skill or strategy aligned to a state standard.  The teacher begins by modeling the skill or strategy with a text.  Students then practice with a partner.  During the independent portion of the workshop students apply the skill or strategy taught in the mini lesson.  During this time the classroom teacher meets with individual students or small groups and provides targeted instruction based on a variety of formal and informal assessments.  Classroom teachers also set individualized goals with students and provide personalized feedback based on their data.  Workshops conclude with a class reflection on what was learned and practiced during the workshop.  This is an opportunity for students to share their celebrations and work with their classmates.

Teachers in kindergarten through third grade use Fundations to explicitly teach phonics.  The Fundations curriculum is a structured literacy approach grounded in the science of reading. The program’s research-based approach and extensive materials allow K–3 teachers to confidently present a carefully structured reading, spelling, and handwriting curriculum using engaging, multisensory techniques.

Math

Gold Rush believes that students need to think critically and problem solve in math. Gold Rush also believes that it is important to teach students how to reason and solve complex problems accurately and efficiently. Students are taught multiple ways to solve problems, and students are asked to explain their thinking.  Teachers across grades K-5 use the Envision curriculum to provide this level of instruction.

The school's gifted and talented coordinator, Response to Intervention instructor and classroom teachers all provide math enrichment and support for students based on their data.  Gold Rush does offer an accelerated math track for students who need significant enrichment.  Additional RtI and special education support is also provided if needed.

Science

Students explore science through the process of inquiry. Inquiry allows students' questions to drive the exploration of grade level units. Students generate questions about the world around them as they engage in hands-on experiments and investigations.  Gold Rush uses the Stemscopes curriculum across grades K-5.

Social Studies

In the area of social studies, students learn how history has influenced the world today. Students explore what can be learned from the past and how they can demonstrate civic responsibility. In all grade levels, social studies is also integrated into other content areas, including reading.
